Motivational Personality of the Week – Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola


Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola is a social entrepreneur and innovator.  She is the Co-Founder of Wecyclers, a recycling company that collects waste from households in Lagos State.  Wecyclers provides convenient recycling services to households across Lagos, while enabling low/middle income communities in Nigeria to make money from the waste piling up in their streets.

The company is in partnership with the Lagos Waste Management Authority and Bilikiss is presently the General Manager of Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK), since 2017.

  1. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola was born in Lagos State, she attended Supreme Education Foundation Secondary School.
  2. She left the University of Lagos after a year to obtain a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Fisk University, USA in 2003.
  3. Subsequently, she obtained a Masters’ Degree in the same course from Vanderbilt University, USA in 2005
  4. After five (5) years of working with IBM, Bilikiss elected to obtain a Masters of Business Administration (MBA) degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), in 2012.
  5. While at MIT that she came up with the idea / innovation of the waste recycling business after a detailed research into this field of recycling operations. Wecyclers basically collects waste from the streets of Lagos, using low cost cargo bicycles to pick up waste from collection centers.
  6. The company aims to address waste management and unemployment by engaging the low and middle income earners in Lagos, with a reward system of giving contributors points via SMS for waste collected.
  7. Since commencing business in Lagos, the company has focused on turning waste into wealth, while supplementing the earning power of the relevant households.
  8. Wecyclers has over 15,000 households registered in its network of collection services within three (3) neighbourhoods in Lagos and with clear expansion plans.
  9. The company collects about 3,000 metric tons of recyclable materials and have created about 100 jobs opportunities and continues to meet the rewards and points obligation to its subscribers (gifts and cash prizes inclusive).
  10. Her company works in partnership with the Lagos Waste Management Authority, Coca-cola and GlaxoSmithkline due to the manufacturing activities involved. Wecyclers has partnerships with other banks and notable organisations in Nigeria, who are supporting Wecyclers expansion plans and visibility.
  11. Bilikiss has been acknowledged and spoken about in various countries like the United States of America, Germany, United Kingdom, and on popular media outlets like The Independent, The Huffington Post, CNN, The Economist and a whole lot more.
  12. Bilikiss Adebiyi-Abiola is a Carroll Wilson Fellow, an Echoing Green Fellow and a 2013 recipient of the Cartier Women’s Initiative Awards for Sub-Saharan Africa. She is also a member of the Lagos State Employment Trust Fund, founded by the Lagos state government.
